Under-19 Friendly International

Republic of Ireland 0-1 Czech Republic
The Republic of Ireland were beaten by the Czech Republic in the first of this week’s pair of Under-19 friendly matches at United Park.
Jan Moravek’s goal for the Czech Republic after 13 minutes was the difference between the nations during a game of few chances.
Ireland came close to drawing level three minutes before the break when debutant David McDaid’s header produced a magnificent save from the Czech goalkeeper Bomas Vaclik who had to dive full-length across goal to deny the Derry City striker.
The visitors were almost gifted an opener on nine minutes when Ribor Kozak availed of a mix-up in the Irish defence and angled a shot marginally over but the Czechs did go ahead four minutes later.
Midfielder Vlastimil Bolak unlocked Ireland’s defence by slipping a pass to the edge of the area where the unmarked Jan Moravek had time and space to shoot past goalkeeper Shane Redmond with a low drive from ten yards.
McDaid missed a great opportunity seconds after the restart following a good passing movement by Ireland. James Berrett’s pass released Danny Earls on the left and his shot from distance was only parried by Vaclik. McDaid followed in the rebound but snatched at the effort and blazed wide from close-range.
Graham Carey also fashioned a chance when he flashed a shot across the goal with 25 minutes left but that was the nearest Ireland came to drawing level.
Ireland will be seeking a better result when the nations meet again on Thursday (7.30pm).
