Ireland 1 (Murphy) Netherlands 3 (Latuperissa, Sneijder, Karim)

Ireland started very well and were the first to attack with Aaron Doran raiding down the left wing and after beating the full back crossed over but nobody had read his intentions and it was an easy save for Zoet in the Dutch goal.

Latupeirissa showed a flash of his skills and speed s he left the Irish defence for dead but he overran the ball which went wide.

Ireland began to show good technique and skill and with the midfield quartet of Murphy, Towell, Clifford and Doran taking control the Irish defence were having little to do. Ireland were awarded a free kick after ten minutes and a great cross by Paul Murphy touched a Dutch head and luckily was deflected for the first corner when the shot looked goal bound.

Holland were awarded a free kick which was taken quickly and only for the alertness of Mark Power Ireland could have been in trouble.

After 12 minutes Latuperissa ran on to a great ball from Sneijder and although looking offside (he was directly in line with me) strode into space and scored easily past the advancing Hanley in the Irish goal.

This goal changed the pattern of the game with the Irish now playing second fiddle to rejuvenated Holland.

Ireland composed themselves and after Paul Murphy made a telling run down the right wing and after beating the full back he crossed for the inrushing Doran to get a foot to the ball. The Dutch keeper got a foot to the shot and the ball went upon to the left upright and then hit the crossbar and onto the left upright.

In all my years involved in football. I have never seen anything like it the ball hitting both uprights and the crossbar- Was this an omen for the night? If it was nobody told the team as they continued to outplay Holland.

Holland were now on the back foot and the referee had to speak to a Dutch midfielder for a tackle on Neil Harney. Harney continued after treatment.

Ireland had a further chance after 30 minutes when Conor Clifford had a shot on gaol well saved by Zoë in the Dutch goal. Irelands perseverance eventually paid off when Karl Sheppard was taken down on the edge of the box. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and after Shepard had received treatment Paul Murphy was entrusted with the responsibility of taking the penalty. Murphy kept his cool and sent the keeper the wrong way as he hit his shot to the keepers left.
Ireland went in at half time level pegging.

The second half had only commenced and after four minutes Holland took the lead after a defensive lapse allowed Karim to score.

Holland were now in the ascendancy and we were treated to some great movement off the ball and unlike the first half the Dutch were now crisp in their passing and the movement off the ball was a joy to behold.

Ger Hanley in the Irish goal came to the rescue when he brought off a tremendous save as Schouw had a shot from thirty yards.

Karl Sheppard had a great run which brought him into the box and he ran out of space as the Dutch defence surrounded him. He did however manage to get a corner. Gavin Gunning met the corner with a sweet header but Zoet held the ball under the crossbar and despite half hearted roars of a goal the referee remained unperturbed.

After 56 minutes Holland scored the third and important goal as a shot by Karim was deflected past the outstretched hand of Ger Hanley in the Irish goal and the ball trickled over the line.

The game was played out with little excitement as both teams introduced substitutions.

Ireland were unable to find that extra yard and Holland held on to what really was

A travesty of justice. Ireland deserved far more from their first half performance alone.

Vincent Butler was not in any way undeterred as he said” For the first half we were in control This is a huge learning experience and sometimes you learn more from a defeat than from a victory.”
