The new year started with disappointment after a gritty Hungary kept out everything the Irish threw at them in the Maccabi Netanya ground.

Hungary took the lead in the fourth minute when Gabor Pozssar fired home from 25 yards. They increased their lead in the 54th minute when Pozssar crossed for Martin Oross to head home.

Peter Bajzath was sent off for the Hungarians but the closest Ireland came to scoring was when Brendan Mc Gill struck a post in the 32nd minute.
