Republic of Ireland 2 1 Russia
The Republic of Ireland’s Under 19 side, managed by Sean McCaffrey, grabbed an injury time goal to beat Russia 2 -- 1 in their final game of the UEFA Under 19 Championships First Qualifying Phase in the Tsirio Stadium in Cyprus today.
With the teams deadlocked at one a-piece and Ireland needing a victory to qualify for the next phase, Arsenal’s Patrick Gregg sent in the cross for Jonathan Hayes to head home at the far post in the 92nd minute.
Gregg had given Ireland the lead from the penalty spot in the 48th minute only for Taranov to equalise for the Russians eleven minutes later.
After the disappointment of losing to Cyprus on Wednesday, McCaffrey’s boys were in a determined mood today against a Russian side which had won both its earlier games. They were rewarded with the last gasp winner from Hayes to see them through the next Qualifying Phase. |
