World Cup Qualifier
10.09.2008 at 18:00 - Pod Goricom - Gradski - Podgorica

Preview
The Republic of Ireland's FIFA World Cup qualifier in Montenegro is not only a chance for Kevin Kilbane to win his 90th cap; it is also an opportunity for the winger turned full-back to make history if he starts the game in Podgorica.

Decade approaching
Since the Republic drew 1-1 with Turkey in a UEFA EURO 2000™ play-off in November 1999, they have played 49 qualifying matches for World Cups and UEFA European Championships plus four games at the 2002 tournament in Korea/Japan – and Kilbane has been in the first XI for every single one. Statisticians at the Football Association of Ireland have been trying to work out if his achievement is a European or even a world record. But the 31-year-old, who has avoided serious injury and suspensions throughout the period, is calm about the prospect of a 50th straight competitive appearance.

Points important
"It's very nice to get," said the Wigan Athletic FC left-back, who has also represented Ireland as a left-winger and central midfielder. "To play so many games for your country is good and I am pleased to have got so many caps. But it's not about me, it's about the team and us getting three World Cup points in Montenegro. It's good to have the record but I would give up any record or place in the history books if it means getting to another World Cup," continued the former Everton FC and Sunderland AFC player.

Facial injury
Kilbane has made an extra effort to join up with the squad for the Group 8 matches against Georgia and Montenegro. He wore a protective face mask during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Georgia in Mainz after suffering a fractured cheekbone in English Premier League action. Captain Robbie Keane said: "It's fantastic that Kevin has built up that record. He has a lot of caps and a lot of experience and he's great to have in the squad. Kevin is always desperate to play for his country – you've seen that over the years. Even last week he had a bad injury but he was desperate to come over to Dublin with the lads."
