Ned Courtney born in Dublin , when he joined the Army he settled in Cork and played for Cork United.
His League Championship win in 1945/1946 led to him being selected for his international debut in June 1946 after Tommy Brenn cried off injured.
It was an eventful day as he was injured trying to prevent Portugal's third goal and was replaced in goal by Con Martin who became Ireland's the first ever substitute goalkeeper.
Ned hada successful time with Cork winning bac to back League titles in 1949/50 and 1950/1951 and he also played in three successive Cup Finals.
