UEFA Women's U17 - First Phase Qualification
FYR Macedonia 0-6 Ireland

Ireland have taken one step closer to securing their place in the next phase of the U17 Women’s European Championships with a comprehensive 6-0 victory over hosts Macedonia.

Ireland got off to the best possible start when early pressure resulted in consecutive corners. Chloe Mustaki saw her shot crash off the crossbar, but Amber Barrett reacted quickest to open the scoring for Ireland.

15 minutes in, Claire Shine won the ball from poor Macedonian defending and punished them by beating 2 defenders and firing home from the right hand side.

Ireland were in full control and moments later had a commanding lead. Ciara Rossiter burst forward with purpose, drawing in the Macedonian defence, as she slipped the ball through to Katie McCabe who had time and space to deliver a cross which found Gemma McGuiness lurking with intent in the six yard box. 3-0 Ireland at half time, but could have been so much more such was the power and purpose in attack, which Ireland possessed.

Ireland picked up where they left off early in the second half putting the game well and truly beyond the hosts. Corner swung in dangerously found the towering figure of Mary Fitzpatrick, whose header found McGuiness unmarked in the box to head home Ireland’s fourth.

Annie Monaghan, Lauren Boles and Sarah Rowe were all introduced in the second half and the fresh legs proved too much for Macedonia. Clare Shine grabbed her second of the game with a left footed shot from just inside the box. While substitute Monaghan wrapped up the scoring in the dying moment. A clever free kick, chipped in by Mustaki found Barrett whose initial shot was blocked. Monaghan was on hand to power home the rebound.

Next up in the final group game is Italy who were defeated 3-2 by Romania today, so they’ll be looking to get back to winning ways. A tough game ahead but no doubt the girls in green will rise to the challenge once again.
