Womens International Under 17
1 - 2
The Republic of Ireland Women’s Under 17 side were narrowly defeated 2-1 by a strong Swiss outfit in Whitehall, in the first of this week’s double international friendly.
Noel King’s side started extremely well but found themselves 2-0 down after only 17 minutes as they tried to get a firm grip on the game.
The visitors were in front after 14 minutes when an Irish attack was broke down in the Swiss half. Midfielder, Bettina Barr caused havoc for the Irish defence when she broke down the left wing and applied an inch-perfect cross for a Swiss attacker to put the ball beyond Niamh Reid-Burke in the Irish goal.
Switzerland capitalised on Ireland’s slow reaction to their counter attacks once again after only 17 minutes when an Irish attack broke down. Swiss attacker, Raqel Kiwie broke down the left wing, skipping past the Irish defence and made no mistake with her powerful finish into the Irish net.
The Republic of Ireland regrouped well after their poor start and Gillian McDonnell, Hannah Barrett and Karen Duggan in midfield controlled the pace of the game throughout.
The Irish were back in touch just before the break on 42 minutes when a sustained period of pressure in the Swiss box forced a penalty for the Irish when a defender seemed to handle the ball. Stella Maris’s Emily Hanney made no mistake from the spot kick as she buried the ball past the hapless keeper.
In the second half, Switzerland looked to add to their advantage as their strong, imposing attackers pushed on but the Irish defence stood firm with Republic of Ireland sweeper, Susan Hackett marshalling her defence to keep Switzerland at bay.
Republic of Ireland Manager, Noel King was understandably delighted with his teams’ performance, “Traditionally Switzerland have always been physically and tactically strong at this level and it is huge credit to our girls who have challenged their opposition all the way today.”
He added, “We have an incredibly young team with a number of first-call up’s for some of the girls but I think we worked really hard for each other and I have no doubt that will pay off in our second international friendly on Thursday”
