Drogheda United win Under 17 FAI Cup

Drogheda United claimed the FAI Umbro Under-17 Challenge Cup with a resounding 4-1 victory over WFTA at Gannon  Park.

The Boynesiders got off to a dream start, going 2-0 up inside the opening three minutes. With the game just two minutes old, William Woods put Drogheda in the lead when he slid the ball under the on-rushing Brian Kane.

WFTA had barely re-grouped when they found themselves two goals down. With a strong breeze aiding Drogheda United, Barry McDonnell latched onto a long ball and lobbed Kane to double the lead.

Despite the scoreline, WFTA refused to give up and put Drogheda under sustained periods of pressure, Stephen Cummins twice coming close to reducing the deficit.

Second half substitute Ian McNeill almost got the Dublin side off the mark on 63 minutes but his dipping shot from 18 yards struck the crossbar.

Five minutes later, WFTA finally did score, Patrick Madden’s glancing header giving Joe Flanagan no chance.

At 2-1, Drogheda were set for a nervous ending. However, those nerves were calmed with ten minutes remaining when Colm Smith’s close range effort restored Drogheda’s two goal advantage.

William Woods put the icing on the cake in the final minute when he lobbed the on-rushing Kane to ensure victory for Drogheda United.
