Drogheda get out of jail This was never going to be easy, a seemingly easy fixture with Dublin City, ex Drogs on display, pressure to win before the home crowd etc , etc, etc. Started off indifferently against a well-organised Dub City, pumping balls down the middle played right into Stewie's hands - unfamiliar look to the side with Fabio and Shane Barrett up front, Garto at left full and Simon Webb further up on the left. Despite our usual confident display at the back, where we dominated and pushed the ball around pretty well, but final ball was always the hardest to get right and we seemed run out of ideas despite having plenty of possession. On 9 minutes Simon Webb went to the byline and crossed over to see Gavin Whelan snap at the ball and send it harmlessly over Gary's bar. Then on 24 , great play by Simon again and he struck the butt of the post with Gary beaten. Stewie was unluckily injured and was helped off to generous applause from the home crowd. What a difference it was a tonight compared to the bad sportsmanship from the Cork crowd and players on Firday (and don't get me started on Gus-Hiddink-without-brains). There was a healthy respect among both sets of players both for each other and fore the officials - not what we saw on Friday. And out for the second half and two changes, Fitz for Shane Barrrett, Paul Keegan for Robbo, Gavin Whelan went to the right and we looked more purposeful - and almost immediately, Webb cross on the right, Jason Gavin heads it neatly back across and there was Fabio from a yard out to head home !. And we thought - here we go !! , but we didn't - a mixture of bad luck and poor finishing and we just could score the second, Then on 78, we concede a free , free hits the wall, Grayser and Fitz go for the same ball , it runs loose and their No 11 buries it with a great shot. And its one-one and three minutes later Fabio is bowled over but no peno and on it goes and on 89 who but Mark Rooney gets the ball on the left and what did he do ??? I'll tell yiz what he done - he buried it !. Of course, it could have gone anywhere but that's the way the story goes. And we pushed up and pressed - 3 extra minutes on the board, two of them gone and corner on the right and over it comes, some confusion in the box and there's Fabio to poke it home --------Jaysus, what a relief. And Hugo blew almost immediately and in the end we took the point and its off to Bray on Sunda for more of the same, but hopefully we wont leave it as late !. Dublin: Rogers, Brennan, Doyle, Kelly, Malcolm (Freeman 21), Crowley, McGill, Whelehan, McCarthy (O'Donnell 82), Rooney, Pender. Taken from Drogheda United Website |
