Galway not at the races

Something had to give in this game – Dundalk were on the back of an amazing 18 match unbeaten run – Galway had won the last eight games and were unbeaten at home since Sept 2005. It was always going to be a big occasion.

PhillyHughes.jpgTo be honest it never materialised, Dundalk were by far the better team – Galway were never at the races.

From the moment that full back and Captain John Flanagan scored there was always going to be one winner. John Gill’s men having had a dreadful start to the League are now the only serious contenders to Shamrock Rovers grabbing the title and after last night’s win go back to the top of the table.

In front of a full stadium – Crowd was slightly over 3,000 – Galway gave probably their poorest display in a long time.

Maybe I am being unfair to Dundalk – maybe they did not let Galway play – They certainly did their homework and with Sean Finn “bossing” the middle they were never going to be deposed.

Another goal from Flanagan finished off with the usual from Philip Hughes (above) scoring his 21st of the season left Dundalk in control.

Galway got a consolation goal in the final minute when Philip Reilly flicked on a corner over the head of the excellent Bennion in the Dundalk goal.

John Gill was a  happy man after the game, he was happy that his team has continued to play football despite the increased pressure being placed on his team,  but being realistic – “It was only three points , we now have to look forward to our next game next Thursday against Kilkenny City and that game is now more important”
